Hot Stone Massage is a speciality massage that
involves application of smooth, water-heated basalt stones of varying
sizes to key points on the body, giving a deep massage and creating
sensations of comfort and warmth. Basalt is a black volcanic rock that
absorbs and retains heat well.
The
traditional strokes of Swedish massage are carried out while holding a
heated stone; as the stone cools, the therapist replaces it with another.
Heated stones may also be left on specific points along the spine, in the
palms of the hands, and between the toes for example, to improve the flow
of energy in the body.
The
direct heat helps tight muscles relax, allowing manipulation of a greater
intensity than with regular massage; it is a deeply soothing, relaxing
form of massage.
